Salem Garden Collaborative

Where Salem Village grows together

About the garden:

Located: 1040 Garvey Rd, Columbus 43229

Salem Garden Collaborative is a community garden on the grounds of Salem Elementary in Northland, built by the neighbors of Salem Village together with the school. Its mission is to nourish Northland neighbors of all ages and backgrounds with food, education, and friendship, and it lives that out with raised beds for students and neighbors, a garden club for students and parent volunteers, and workdays, tastings, and gatherings through the season.

It started in July 2023, when a group of neighbors spent one day clearing an overgrown raised bed garden at the school that had sat untouched since the pandemic. Local businesses donated supplies, neighbors showed up with plants from their own yards, and by the end of the day the beds were back in use as a learning space for the school.

Join our Community Garden:

Berwick is a mixed use garden with space for kids to grow, communal beds that grow for the community and our service partner agencies, and 11 plots that families can lease each growing season. Plots are open to gardeners at every experience level.

*Applications open January 1st thru April 1st

FREE Farmstands

Produce grown at Salem Garden Collaborative is shared at our free farmstand with students, families, staff, and neighbors. Check back here for upcoming farmstand dates and community events.

SIGN UP TO VOLUNTEER

Salem runs on neighbors. Join a workday to plant, weed, mulch, and build, or lend a hand with garden club and events. No experience needed, and kids are welcome with an adult. Sign up below and the Salem team will be in touch.

We are part of the CCS Farm to School Program:

Salem Garden Collaborative is part of the Columbus City Schools Farm to School program, which puts gardens at schools across Columbus so students learn by growing. The program engages students through experiential learning, puts more fresh produce in front of them, teaches cooperation and solving things, and introduces careers in agriculture.

Because school gardens run only during the school year, planting starts in August, and low tunnels and frost cover keep crops going through fall and winter so there is something to plant and harvest every month school is in session. Everything harvested goes back to students for tastings in the classroom or cafeteria, and leftovers go home with recipes so families can cook together.

CCS teachers are also working with Ohio State on a USDA-funded pilot to build a month-by-month guide for growing through the school year.
