About the farm:
Located: Mid-Ohio Farm on the Hilltop

The Flex Acre Hydroponic System at Mid-Ohio Farm is our controlled-environment growing hub, built for consistent production and hands-on learning year-round. This system supports high-density growing indoors, making it possible to produce fresh greens reliably while demonstrating modern, space-efficient farming methods. It also strengthens our education and volunteer experiences by providing a clean, structured environment for learning plant growth, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
The Flex Acre came to the Hilltop through a partnership between the Garden District and Mid-Ohio Food Collective’s Mid-Ohio Farm. The Garden District invested in the system and set it up in the farm’s multipurpose building, where it anchors the farm’s field trip experience and gives more students a chance to plant, tend, and harvest. We are grateful to Mid-Ohio Food Collective, Fork Farms, The Beck Foundation, Columbus City Schools, and the Steitz Family for investing in this partnership.

Come learn it by doing it. The Flex Acre is a vertical hydroponic farm built by Fork Farms, with two growing walls, 576 plant positions, LED lighting, and a recirculating water and nutrient system in place of soil and sun. It grows the same crop in January that it grows in July, and it runs on volunteers.
A volunteer shift means seeding, transplanting, checking water and nutrients, harvesting, and cleaning and resetting the system, with the produce headed to a neighborhood food pantry. You will leave knowing how an indoor farm actually works, from seed to harvest to the cooler. No experience needed, it is indoors in every season, and shifts are short.
