Propolis Community Garden sits on a large lot on North Yale Avenue in Franklinton, once home to Magic House Farms. After the farm closed, the site sat vacant for two years, and weeds took over the beds, paths, and fence lines. In 2026, a group of Franklinton neighbors, most of them new to gardening, took it on with a simple motto: bang for our buck. Keep it simple, work with what is already on the site, and make sure the neighborhood gets something real out of it.
Propolis is the resin honeybees use to seal and protect the hive, a fitting name for a garden being patched back together by the people around it. The crew spent their first season clearing, rebuilding, and getting ground back into production, learning as they went and pulling in more neighbors with every workday. The renovation is still underway, and the same people who revived it are the ones leading it into next season.
